The Lessons of Time

In the heart of Aquitaine, the Pécharmant vineyards are the oldest in the Bergerac region.  Although vines were first planted locally by the Romans, those of Pécharmant owe their firm establishment to pioneer monks in the 11th century - becoming Church property known as the "Vinée Nord" (broadly, the North Wine Crop). Since then, Pécharmant's wine growers have had ample time to get to know their terroir thoroughly and learn how to get the best out of it.

Since the 18th century, for example, they have known that their best course was to produce powerful red wines which would acquire finesse by being allowed to age.

They also learned that the incomparable taste of their wine was due to the unique nature of Pécharmant's soil, known as "Périgord sand and gravel", which covers a deep layer of clay and iron called "tran".

Experience acquired over the years taught them, as well, how to master the art of blending, to achieve a due balance between the different grape varieties while preserving the individual character of each: the Merlot, giving suppleness and roundness; Cabernet Sauvignon, providing body and bouquet; Cabernet Franc, for fruitiness and aroma; and the red Côt (also known as Malbec or Auxerrois), for a touch of velvet.

Wines from the area were already being shipped to England from the 13th century onwards. After the Hundred Years War, the Netherlands became another big export market for them. In late autumn, a veritable armada of flat-bottomed craft gathered in the river harbour at Bergerac each year to carry the barrels downstream.

Today, the wines are exported throughout Europe, North America, and as far distant as Japan.
